ABOUT BRIT MILAH

Through the Brit Milah (Bris), or ritual circumcision, the Jewish boy enters the covenant binding G-d and the Jewish people, the descendants of our forefather Abraham. The religious ceremony in which the mohel (circumciser) performs the procedure takes place on (but not before) the eighth day after birth, and occasionally later if it needs to be postponed due to medical (baby has to be healthy) or religious (time and type of birth) reasons.

THE PROCEDURE

The Brit Milah procedure is performed in the daytime (between sunrise and sunset) using sterile technique and equipment.  The steps involved in the procedure are performed very quickly, and generally the procedure is over before the infant realizes what happened.  Anesthesia is provided after the procedure in the form of alcohol in the wine that the baby is given to sip that calms him down.

POST PROCEDURE

Tylenol may be used for post-procedural discomfort.
